Fly & Bivy FAQ

Q: What activities & situations are Tarps & Bivy's best for?

A: There are many activities that Tarps (sometimes called fly's, fly-tents, tarpaulin, & hootchie's) & Bivy (sometimes called bivvy, bivvie, bivy sacks, bivuoac, bivi, & swags) can be used for. Some examples are:

Lightweight back-country hunting & fishing- the lightweight packable nature of tarps, bivy bags, & hooped bivy make them superb for keeping your back-pack bulk & weight down, while leaving you with lots of carrying capacity on the journey out after a succesful trip.

Tramping & hiking - light-weight packable fly-tarp, bivi bags & hooped bivi shelter gives you a great back-up plan if the huts turn out full, or the weather turns dangerous mid journey. Every tramper & hiker should carry one, even if only for emergency shelter.

Campingtrips - the room you save in your pack with light-weight packable tarp, tent fly, bivvie bag, & bivvie shelter gives you more room for those snacks, nibbles & refreshments to enjoy your stay!

Around base camp- lightweight tarps, flys, bivvy bag, & hooped bivvy are great for putting up over cooking & meeting areas, to provide shelter from rain & sun..

Back-packing, Cycling & Motor-Cycling Journeys - on your trip around the country or your OE, it's always a comfort to know you have a lightweight tarp, fly, bivvy bag, or bivouac shelter with you when you find that perfect camp-site to stay in for the night, or you need to take refuge from the elements.

Camper & Caravan road trips - space is always at a premium, so why not take an extremely packable tarp / tent fly along for an extra awning when you need more protection from the elements. The kids will love a hooped bivy each to camp outside in...think of the peace & quiet you will enjoy at night!

Around the home - great for some temporary shelter while you are cooking on the BBQ, for your guests to stand under, or for the kids stayover, & when not in use the lightweight tarp & bivy shelters will pack down well in your emergency survival kit.

Q: What benefits do siliconised PU (polyurathane) coated fabrics offer?

A: Siliconised Nylon Ripstop PU Coated material is the best performing material for its weight in terms of durability and waterproofing!

Q: We hear siliconised PU coated fabric is lightweight - does it pack well?

A: yes - siliconised PU coated fabrics are extremely compact & compressable, allowing the fly - tarps to pack down very well, making it perfect for lightweight camping, hunting, fishing, back-packing, & travel.

Q: How waterproof & breathable are the bivy fabrics?

A: The Bivy fabrics are designed to keep the rain out, and to allow the moisture vapour within to pass through the fabric to the environment. Our bivy fabrics offer 10,000 mm Hydrostatic Resistance (meaning it successfully resisted a 10m column equivalent of water pressure in testing), and 3,000 gr/m2/day (meaning the fabric successfully allowed the equivalent 3000 grams of water vapour to pass through it in a 24 hour test period) . In practice, breathable fabrics work best when it is cold & dry outside, & warm on the inside. Because we get a wide range of conditions in the Australian outdoors, our bivy bags have a range of additional strategies deployed to ensure comfort in all conditions - from dual zips on the bivy bag through to a mesh ventilation layer on the hooped bivy. Our Bivy's & Tarps are made by Aquaquest - leaders in waterproof technology.

Q: Will a Bivy bag provide some insulation?

A: Bivy bags will indeed add around 5 degrees C to the warmth of a typical sleeping bag used inside it - they are wind insulating, waterproof & warming!

Q: Is there a warranty on the Tarps & Bivy Bags?

A: Materials & Craftmanship are fully warranted against defects to the original owner. If our products prove defective, we will repair or replace it accordingly.
